OUR WORSHIP LIFE

SCHEDULE
We worship each Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.  Midweek services are held on Wednesday evenings in Lent at 7:00 p.m.

THE HEART OF WORSHIP
Since worship is at the very heart of Christian community, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is committed to providing worship opportunities that will enable people to encounter the living God.   Our style of worship is blended in that it includes both traditional and contemporary music and liturgy.  We seek to provide a worship experience which  is celebratory and meaningful for all age groups, and of course, we warmly welcome visitors.

HOLY COMMUNION
Holy Communion is celebrated at Our Savior's on the first and third Sunday of each month. In this meal, we remember that Jesus’ body was broken and his blood was poured out for the forgiveness of our sins. By eating and drinking, we participate in this saving event of the past. Yet this feast is more than just a memory—we also recognize that Christ is present with us today. He is in, with and under the bread and wine—nourishing us and strengthening us in our faith. And this sacrament is also a foretaste of the feast to come when all creation will be united under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

All baptized Christians who receive communion in their home congregations are welcome to join in this holy meal at Our Savior’s Lutheran. The children of our members are eligible to begin receiving Communion in the fifth grade, but if your child has already begun receiving communion in your home congregation, regardless of age, he or she is welcome to receive it here, too. Children and adults who do not yet receive communion are invited to come forward with their families to be given a special blessing.

HOLY BAPTISM
We believe that in baptism, God forgives sin, delivers from death and the devil and give everlasting salvation to all who believe what God has promised. Our baptism, then, becomes central to our very identity as people of God. Since baptism is a totally free gift of God, it is open to people of all ages, including infants. Martin Luther said that there is no better picture of unearned grace than a child at the baptismal font. Through our confirmation program, young people can learn more about their baptism in order to publicly affirm it at the rite of confirmation. To be baptized or to learn more about baptism, please contact Pastor Gentry.

SERMONS
Pastor posts her sermons each week at her sermon blog.  Printed copies are also available in the narthex.

ACTIVITY BAGS
Carolyn Vogel has made a set of children's activity bags.  They are available in the narthex to keep our little worshipers happy.  There is also a nursery area in the basement with a rocking chair, toys and a changing table.

CHRISTMAS EVE MEMORIES
Our Savior's member, Judy Wood, wrote this description of the Candlelight Christmas Eve service.

It was 7:00 p.m. on December 24th and a 135 year-old red brick church in Lansing Iowa had luminaries lit—guiding up the multitude of steps to the front doors. The inside was packed with happy people and anxious children.

The two-story tall Christmas tree graced the left side of the altar with brilliant red poinsettias framing both sides of the tree. At the base of the tree was a lone manger. Poinsettias were placed on the altar, piano and at the base of the Advent stand with its three purple candles, one pink candle and one white candle. Candles graced the pews along the center aisle.

The minister welcomed us with a smiling face, beaming personality, a warm heart and open arms. The organist, who has a doctor’s degree in music, alternated playing the piano on the main floor and the organ in the choir loft. The Advent candles were lit, scriptures were read and many old Christmas carols were sung. After communion was shared by all, we had our special candle lighting ceremony.

All the candles along the pews were lit and everyone lit and held their own candles. Then a gentleman stood up in front of the church and the piano started to play and the most beautiful and moving song was sung by the retired opera singer. The whole church vibrated to "O Holy Night" while the lights were dimmed and candles flickered. It was a most moving night and once again we were reminded of the true reason for Christmas.

When we arrived home we decided to save the presents for the next day. We wanted to savor the inner peace this evening had brought us.
